Blackberries are becoming mass in India. It may be a passing phenomenon, as with everything else in technology. But it is still is a noticeable phenomenon.
So why exactly is India becoming blackberry country. I mean the rest of the world is moving on to iPhone and Android. By the time I got my blackberry all my US relatives had moved on to iPhone. I didn't have anyone to add on my BBM list.
But recently one of my friends said she and her family bought 5 blackberries on their malaysia trip. I was like what??? Y?? Because all the family was chatting all day on bbm and she was feeling left out.
And that's pretty much it. The story of blackberry. Corporate email made sure all upwardly mobile executives were carrying a company provided Blackberry. Then BBM happened. It became the preferred form of communication for yuppies. You could only add other blackberry users so they started selling cheaper blackberry handsets. Then the mail lite plan arrived which allowed unlimited IM and Email for only Rs. 299. Its probably blackberry's cheapest offering anywhere in the world.
Its also about being seen as someone important. And connected. and respectable and cool at the same time. If I saw you holding an iphone I would think u r stupid or u have too much extra cash or both. Nothing says 'you are important' as well as a high end Blackberry does. Everything else is too gimmicky. Most ppl can't use all the technology anyway. A friend of mine just bought a blackberry. She didn't even know there was gtalk in it.
A blackberry is just used to keep in touch. In style.
