Parents vs Wal-Mart Over Bath-Time Photos of Kids

Parents vs Wal-Mart Over Bath-Time Photos of Kids

Parents love to take pictures of their kids. One couple did just that and took pictures of their daughters after bath-time, with some of the photos showing the children partially wrapped in a towel. A normal event, done by parents all over the world!

But at an Arizona Wal-Mart, an employee thought otherwise and turned over the bath-time photos of the kids to authorities, deeming the partially nude photos to be inappropriate and shocking. Police was called and they in turn determined the photos as child erotica and child pornography.

What followed was just nightmare for the parents who thought they were recording cute photos of their kids after bath time: their kids taken over by child protective services for a month, the mother suspended from a teaching job for a year, the couple put on a list of sex offenders, and having to fight to get custody of their kids back.

A medical examiner found no sign of abuse and a judge ruled the photos were harmless.

This is a sad state of affair where our society seems to be unable anymore to distinguish between what is normal appropriate behavior and what is not.

Parents, be careful what you send to an outside printing service. Some shops have a strict policy and will report any pictures where nakedness is present, especially where children are involved. (This goes the same to posting pictures on the Web.) Be smart, invest in your own printer and print your own family pictures.

PMA and dpreview.com want your opinions

US photographic trade body PMA and dpreview.com are conducting a survey looking for the views of dedicated amateur photographers. The five-minute survey asks about your photographic use, the features you'd like to see in cameras and your use and experience of photo sharing sites and printing services. It aims to get a clearer understanding of what committed non-professional photographers want from their cameras and related services and may even result in those things getting a bit better. Responses will be discussed at the forthcoming 6Sight conference.

Just posted: our in-depth Sigma DP2 review

Just Posted! Our review of the Sigma DP2. Sigma was the first company brave enough to put a large sensor in a compact body and its DP1 was an interesting, if flawed creation. The DP2 is its second attempt - featuring a 41mm equivalent F2.8 lens and a series of improvements derived from the company's experiences with the DP1. However, it is no longer the only compact camera claiming to offer 'the power of DSLR' so can the DP2 see off the interlopers and does its unique sensor design give it hidden depths?

Microsoft Readies Free Online Office

Microsoft Readies Free Online Office

Microsoft has quietly begun online trials of its online version of Microsoft Office with a select group of SkyDrive customers. The online Web Apps suite will include free versions of Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

It seems that the thin client vision (or a version of it) Oracle tried to implement many years ago (way too early!) is slowly becoming a reality thanks to Google and now Microsoft.

Wireless Power: Phone Recharges Using Radio Waves

Wireless Power: Phone Recharges Using Radio Waves

Nokia has shown a prototype of a cell phone that uses ambient radio waves in the air to recharge its batteries. This “wireless power” harvets electromagnetic energy from TV, radio, or even other mobile phone systems and creates a small amount of electrical current (5 milliwatts), enough to slowly recharge the cell phone battery while it’s in standby mode.

OK, this is not recent news [June 2009], but I just read it and thought it’s just brilliant! I guess there should be no reason why this technology, once perfected, could not be used to [slowly] recharge a digital camera’s battery.
