Canon has said it will have no presence or representation at the annual PMA trade show in Anaheim, California, in February. Canon USA has traditionally had one of the largest stands at the show and the Japanese parent company has regularly sent senior figures to the event. However, in light of the convergence of technologies from across its range: 'the decision has been made by Canon USA to only participate in 2010 trade shows and events that have the broadest reach,' the company said. It will still attend the International CES show organized by the Consumer Electronics Association. The event, which covers a wider range of electronics, takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 7-10th.

Just Posted: Our preview sample gallery from the Canon PowerShot G11. It's the first time in the G-series' history that the nominal resolution has decreased on a new model. We've got hold of a production version of Canon's latest flagship compact camera and so you can see for yourself what impact this move has had on the image output. As usual we've made sure to include a variety of light situations and ISO-settings.

Just Posted: Our preview sample gallery from the Canon PowerShot S90. We've just got hold of a production version of this latest photographers' compact, so, given the apparent level of interest, have put together a preview samples gallery. Canon made a big play of its 'high sensitivity' 10 megapixel sensor so we've made sure we've tried it at a range of ISO settings, and have included a couple of low-light portraits under challenging tungsten lighting.

It’s that time of the year agaih when we take a time out and check to see if we are still having fun doing what we do. And, we are! Thanks in a large measure to you, our loyal readers and to the many emails of support you have sent our way. We say, Thank you! We also thank the camera manufacturers (and their Marketing Departments and PR firms) for helping us help them.
PMA Canada
We attended PMA Canada last week here in Toronto and, of course, saw all the cameras that were already introduced earlier and that we already told you about weeks, if not months ago. It was still a good opportunity to meet old friends and renew contacts, make new friends, rub shoulders with the competition, and just breathe in the atmosphere. We collected lots of business cards, and put down our name for loaner reviews so you can expect to read reviews of some great cameras in the near future.
Housekeeping
I use Firefox as my browser and have not ventured back into IE territory for a while now. So, for those of you still using IE, you can imagine my surprise when I went to use IE just by chance one day last week and I saw all those javascript errors popping up. I have been experimenting with Jquery and though they work well in FF, IE gave oodles of errors. Needless to say, I spent the week end fixing these errors (just for old timer IE) and you should be able to browse the site without those annoying errors now. Our apologies. IE also renders the page differently since it is a non-compliant browser, though IE 8 has improved lots and try to adhere to the W3C Standards. Still, if you are using an old version of IE, do yourself a great favor and upgrade to the latest IE — or, better still, switch to Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or Apple Safari and learn to enjoy surfing the Web all over again. And if you do encounter any pesky error, do let us know.
Previews vs. Reviews
We received an angry email from a reader last week that we misrepresented a Preview as a Review. Now, we never do that — not consciously at least, though typos do happen, especially when we are copying and pasting a lot. In our Reviews Matrix, where we list all the cameras from all the manufacturers and give the links to some of the best reviews and previews, we make sure a tooltip displays when you hover your cursor over the link: if it’s a Preview, we tell you. We’ve always welcomed your email poiting out errors on the site. Be good to your heart, there’s no need to get irate. ;o)
For readers who are new and don’t know the difference, here it is:
- Preview: The reviewer scours the Web for information about a new camera, reads the technical specs, the press releases, and summarizes the important and interesting things about the camera. Some people may thing a Preview is a waste of time, but it really isn’t. It’s homework a reviewer has to do anyway, and a big part of any review contains this material.
- Hands-on Preview: The reviewer has the camera in hand. Still has to do all the above, but now the marketing promises can be actually verified by actual use. Often, the camera is a pre-production one, so the only thing that can be verified is the Handling & Feel part; the reviewer will have to wait for a production-ready camera before making any comments about image quality. Lots of stuff go under a Hands-on Preview: some reviewers will give their “First Impressions” while others may simply post pictures of the new camera.
- Review: A review is always hands-on. This is where the reader — and all of us, too — get really irked when the title says it’s a review and, when we click to the article, it’s just a preview. Nothing wrong with a preview, but we were expecting a review.
Now, the article in question the reader was upset about was the Canon SD980 IS Review @ KenRockwell. Now, now, we all know Ken Rockwell has a unique perspective to things. But he had the camera in hand, took lots of pictures with it and published what we call a “filed” review, not a “technical” review but a review nonetheless. So that article was a review, not a preview. The reader’s definition of a review might not quite coincide with Ken’s, but that’s OK.
The important thing is that we all keep an open mind and read differing opinions. If we published only reviews and opinions we agreed with, there’d be no need to read all of them! Read one, and you’re done. I know some people who told me they only read DPReview. No problem, but even there, if you follow their forums, you’ll see large portion of the readers disagreeing on review recommendations. And Phil and the group there will admit that all reviewers have a bias and it affects what we publish and recommend. As long as we tell you what our bias is, you’re forewarned and everything’s fine.
What is our review bias here at Photoxels? We like digital cameras that are compact, intuitive to use and give great image quality, especially in low light. This bias (or “review criteria,” if that sounds better to you) colors all our reviews. However, we also keep in mind the target audience: if first-time beginner users are looking to buy a digital camera, we want to tell them which digital cameras are best and recommended for them — the same digital cameras will definitely not be recommended for advanced photographers! So, be cognizant of the “Category” a digital camera falls under. Untargeted recommendations, like you see on so many review sites, do a disservice to readers: it often makes them pass over the digital camera that is best for them.
iTunes 9
OK, so who’s the wise guy at Apple who messed with my iTunes? Does anyone else hate the iTunes 9? There’s just waaaay too much information crammed into a small area (reminds me of the megapixels race) and now I have to scroll right and left to see everything on screen (1024 x 768 pixels). To see the whole real estate without the annoying scrolling, I need to change my screen resolution to 1152 x 864 pixels — which makes all the test incredibly small to read, what with the small fonts Apple already uses on its websites and on iTunes. I don’t know guys, but iTunes 9 is just bad UI design.
There, I think I got everything covered for a while.

The results are in after Canon recently put some Sheridan students to the test. Canon Canada and the faculty at Sheridan College created a competition where three talented illustrators were selected to have their work transformed into a skin for the PIXMA iP100 Mobile Photo Printer. The students were given three themes as a starting point for their illustrations; what's inside the box, retro and environment. The three winners had their skin included in a limited edition PIXMA iP100 Mobile Photo Printer bundle available for purchase on the Canon eStore. View the winning designs here: http://www.canon.ca/portal/english/portal.asp?sid=4
MISSISSAUGA, ON, September 9, 2009 – Canon Canada issued a unique challenge in early 2009 to the graduating class of Sheridan College's prestigious Bachelor of Applied Arts – Illustration program: apply your illustrations to the surface of a PIXMA iP100 Mobile Photo Printer to create a unique, customized look.
To generate excitement for the initiative, Canon Canada and the faculty at Sheridan College created a competition where three talented illustrators would be selected to have their work transformed into a skin for the PIXMA iP100 Mobile Photo Printer. The thin, removable vinyl skins used to apply artwork to the printer don't just add a layer of anti-scratch protection, but they also allow customers to customize the appearance of the printer. The students were given three themes as a starting point for their illustrations; what's inside the box, retro and environment.
"We really just wanted to see what the graduates could come up with when given the iP100 as a canvas" said Justin Lam, Director of Marketing for Canon's Consumer Imaging Group. "Our aim was to demonstrate how artistic theory in school can transform in practice for a commercial purpose. They received a template for the iP100, a profile of the typical customer and an example of an iP100 printer with an artist designed skin applied to it. We purposely limited the amount of direction so the students' creative vision would dictate the results and we soon discovered that the Sheridan students had great ambition and very unique artistic traits."
“Getting the chance to work with Canon on this project gave me the chance to see where my style of work can be applied”, said Bryce Huffman, one of the winners from the competition. “For the iP100 skin, I used the shape of the printer and transformed it into a retro-style radio. I hope to get the chance to work on similar projects in the future.”
The three winners had their skin included in a limited edition PIXMA iP100 Mobile Photo Printer bundle available for purchase on the Canon eStore. In addition, each winner received a PowerShot SD780 IS Camera and PIXMA iP100 Mobile Photo Printer.
THE WINNERS
Bryce Huffman – “Stereophonics”
With a passion for painting, Bryce Huffman spends a majority of his time painting robots, lasers, and spaceships. As a recently graduate of the Illustration program at Sheridan College, Bryce iis currently expanding his portfolio by showcasing his work at a variety of gallery showings.
“Getting the chance to work with Canon on this project gave me the chance to see where my style of work can be applied”, he explains. “A lot of my work deals with subtle transformations of objects and creatures plucked out of everyday life, and twisted into my own vision. Strong graphic areas mixed with form and textures are the basic ingredients to my work. For the iP100 skin, I have used the shape of the printer and transformed it into a retro-style radio. I hope to get the chance to work on similar projects in the future.”
Kirk Zimmerman – “Euphoria”
Even from a young age, Kirk Zimmerman predicted a career for himself that revolved around art. Illustration was a perfect fit for Kirk because of its ever-evolving nature. His recent co-op experience at the Region of Halton has him leaning towards a career in graphic design.
“It was a refreshing experience to get the opportunity to work with Canon on a project”, he comments. “It provided an opportunity to do something that was familiar and different at the same time. The great people at Canon really wanted us to push our creativity and just have fun with the project and as an artist, you can’t ask for anything better than that!”
Zimmerman’s skin ‘Euphoria’, evokes a feeling of the Fall season by capturing everything from the colours to the wind.
Jesse Koreck – “Jet Pack”
Splitting time as a youth between the relaxed South Carolina coast, the hi-tech hub of Waterloo and summers kayaking in Ontario wilderness, Jesse Koreck established an infatuation with nature and the design of his surroundings. With a mother in fine arts, and a father in industrial design, Koreck's illustrative work bridges the two fields with precision as he explores concepts concerning the presence of humanity, automation, artificial intelligence and the preservation of ecology.
Koreck ran with the concept "What's inside the box". Using the iP100's print speed as his inspiration, Koreck transformed the guts of the printer into a jet engine.
As Koreck explained, “My concept for the PIXMA iP100 skin involves the figurative visualization of a compelling rehttp://www.canon.ca/portal/english/portal.asp?sid=4far beyond the physical proportions of a conventional printer, providing a perplexing view of the immense speed, strength and power of a jet engine.”

“The move to more megapixels has compromised the overall image quality at higher ISO speeds, limiting this camera’s ability in low-light environments.”
